Some of the potential risk of a fine car Euro 10 billion ($ 13 billion) for failing to meet the European target on carbon emissions by 2012, the European Environment Agency (EEA) said on Tuesday.
“If car manufacturers make no further improvement in carbon efficiency of new cars between 2010 and 2012, non-compliant producers could face fines that total will add up to 10 billion Euros,” said EAA.
Major car manufacturers face being fined if they fail to comply with the instructions to lower emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the main greenhouse gas.
Target emissions in industry is an average of 130 grammes of CO2 per kilometer per passenger vehicles. In this collective targets, the company has its own individual goals that are based on the average of their fleet.
In 2012, 65 percent of new cars registered companies in the European Union must meet the target. In 2013, the threshold will be increased to 75 per cent, 80 per cent by 2014 and finally 100 per cent by 2015.
